An NDIS plan is only as good as the life it helps you build. Plenty of participants in Perth have funding that sits unused, or supports that do not quite fit — often simply because nobody walked them through the practical side. Here are the things we find make the biggest difference.
Before your planning meeting
Describe your hardest day, not your best one
Plans are built on the information you provide. It is natural to downplay difficulties, but your plan needs to fund support for the days when things are genuinely hard. Be honest and specific about what daily life requires.
Bring evidence
Reports from your GP, specialists, occupational therapist and physiotherapist carry real weight. If you live with a spinal cord injury, evidence about pressure care, continence needs, transfers and equipment helps the planner understand the full picture.
Write down your goals
Goals shape funding. Think beyond the clinical — returning to work or study, getting to the beach, cooking for your family, travelling within WA. Goals about participation and independence justify the supports that make them possible.
Using your plan well
- Understand your budget categories. Core, Capacity Building and Capital funding work differently, and knowing what each can pay for prevents nasty surprises.
- Track your spending. Whether you self-manage, use a plan manager or are agency-managed, check in on your budgets regularly rather than discovering a shortfall in month ten.
- Ask providers for service agreements you actually understand. You should know exactly what you are paying for, at what rate, and how to change or end the arrangement.
Choosing providers who earn their place
Choice and control is the heart of the NDIS. You are entitled to providers who show up on time, communicate clearly, and treat your funding with the same care they would their own money. If a provider is not delivering value, you can change — your plan belongs to you.
Preparing for plan reviews
Keep a simple record through the year: what worked, what did not, what changed in your circumstances. Photos, short notes and provider reports all help. A review meeting where you can clearly show how supports were used — and where the gaps are — tends to go far better than one built on memory alone.
You do not have to figure this out alone
Support coordinators, plan managers and experienced providers all exist to help you navigate the scheme. A quick conversation early often saves months of frustration later. This information is general in nature — for advice about your individual plan, speak with your support coordinator, plan manager or the NDIA.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
- Leaving funding unspent out of caution. Consistently unspent budgets can suggest to the NDIA that you need less support than you do. If supports are funded and needed, use them.
- Accepting vague service agreements. If you cannot tell what an hour of support costs or what notice you must give to cancel, ask for it in plain language before signing.
- Waiting for the review to raise problems. If your circumstances change significantly mid-plan — health, housing, informal supports — you can request a plan reassessment rather than struggling until the scheduled review.
- Forgetting informal supports change too. If a family carer becomes unavailable or their capacity reduces, that is exactly the kind of change your plan should reflect.
Working well with plan managers
If you are plan-managed, your plan manager is a genuine ally: they see invoices from every provider and can flag unusual charges, track budget burn rates and help you forecast. Ask them for a simple monthly summary. Good providers make their job easy with clear, accurate invoicing — another small signal of an organisation that respects your funding. Perth has many experienced plan managers who know local providers well; do not hesitate to lean on that knowledge when choosing services.
